Sometimes in secret, Felicity Davis puts on a sari and dreams of Bollywood

II just caught the tail end of a documentary. It was a Bollywood talent show in England and the prize was a contract in India in a Bollywood movie. The winner was a large gregarious English Indian amongst many many hopefuls.  They danced, sang and acted. I was intrigued.

After further investigation I discovered that in England Bollywood dancing has become a craze. What is it about the dancing and Bollywood? What is the dream?

On the front of the dress is a Maharaja palace... a sense of the exotic, of luxury. In the front are the obligatory chorus girls dancing to a Bollywood tune, while the heroine is on the balcony, framed by bridal seeming curtains. The hero, on the back of an elephant, sneaks a kiss.

Meanwhile on the back of the dress a girl (is she the same one?) is getting water in a muddy water hole miles from her village. A tiger stares at her from the undergrowth. Such an exotic tiger in pictures and dreams, but maybe the reality is a bit more brutal.

In the distance green hills beckon, because isn't it always true that it is always greener on the other side of the fence, or the world?

Yes, let us enjoy our fantasies, for don't they make us richer?
